Basketball Fundamental Play – Give and Go

Basketball, like almost every sport, has some fundamental plays
that are used over and over. These moves are tried and true
proven methods of winning or getting in a good position on the
court. Most coaches know these moves and use them in some
fashion during games.
One such fundamental play of basketball is called the give and
go. It is also known by the name pass and cut. This move is a
very popular move of getting players and the ball into a good
shooting position down the court. It involves a method of
isolating the defense, so that the offense can get in good
position and the ball can be delivered to the shooter.
The give and go play is something that every team uses. It is a
versatile play that can be tweaked to fit the players and the
team. Every basketball player should understand the give and go
play.
Basic Moves
The give and go play involves the player who has the ball
passing it off to another player, and then cutting to the
basket, getting the ball back and making the shot. The player
responsible for making the basket at the end of the play needs
to be agile and quick. The player receiving the ball has to be a
good ball defender and have a great pass.
Tips for Making the Move Work
During the give and go it is important that the first player,
the player with the ball at the beginning of the play, can get
into good position to make the basket quickly. There is not a
lot of time for the player to cut and get into position.
The receiving player needs to be open and ready to catch the
ball. He has to watch the first player so he knows where to pass
and when to pass off the ball.
The first player usually makes the cut depending on the
opposing guard. Once the ball is passed off he has to watch the
reaction of the player. Usually the defender will pause, turn
his head or even move slightly to one side which gives the first
player the perfect opportunity to cut. If the defender does not
react as planned, then the player will need to fake so he can
get an open path to the basket.
The team should work together to distract from the passing line
and from the cutter who is going to the basket. It is important
that teamwork not be forgotten during plays like this where
there are a few key players. Everyone else should still have a
job to do and they should be focused on it.
Learning this essential play can help a team to come together
and help to teach players the importance of working together.

move along to different divisions that this play is one they
will always use, which is why it is a fundamental play.
